How to use

Frequently asked questions

How much should I tip at a restaurant?

In the US, 15โ€“20% is the standard for sit-down service โ€” 15% for solid service, 20% (or more) for great service. For takeout or counter service, 10% or a few dollars is common. This calculator defaults to 20% so you can adjust from there.

Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?

Customarily, the tip is calculated on the pre-tax subtotal โ€” that's the number most tip calculators, including this one, expect you to enter. Tipping on the post-tax total just adds a little extra; servers won't complain either way.

How do I split the bill evenly between friends?

Enter the full bill, pick your tip percentage, then set "Split between" to the number of people. The "Each person pays" figure includes everyone's share of the food, tax, and tip โ€” no more passing the phone around.

Can I use a tip percentage that isn't listed?

Absolutely โ€” type any rate into the "Custom tip %" field and it overrides the preset buttons instantly. Useful for rounding up to a nice number or matching a service charge.

Is my bill amount sent anywhere?

No. Like every tool here, the tip calculator runs entirely in your browser. Your bill total never leaves the page.
