URL Encoder / Decoder

Links hate spaces, emoji, and ampersands. Percent-encode any text so it survives inside a URL โ€” or decode a gnarly %20-filled string back into something human.

Encoding makes text safe to put inside a URL. Decoding reverses it.

How to use

  1. Paste your text. A full URL, a query string, or any text with spaces and special characters.
  2. Choose Encode or Decode. Encoding makes text URL-safe; decoding turns %20-style gibberish back into words.
  3. Read the result. It updates live as you type โ€” no button needed.
  4. Copy it. Ready to paste into your link, code, or API call.

Frequently asked questions

How do I encode a URL online?

Paste the text into the box above with Encode selected. Spaces become %20, ampersands become %26, and so on โ€” the output is safe to drop into a query string or path. Unicode and emoji are handled correctly too.

What does %20 mean in a URL?

It's a percent-encoded space โ€” URLs can't contain raw spaces, so they're written as %20. Similarly %26 is &, %3F is ?, and %2F is /. Switch to Decode above and paste any encoded string to see the readable version.

What's the difference between encodeURI and encodeURIComponent?

encodeURIComponent encodes everything except plain letters, digits, and a few safe symbols โ€” the right choice for query values. encodeURI leaves URL structure characters like : / ? # alone โ€” the right choice for whole URLs. This tool uses encodeURIComponent semantics so values come out fully safe.

Is my text uploaded anywhere?

No โ€” encoding and decoding happen entirely in your browser. Paste URLs, tokens, and query strings with confidence.
