Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a 20% discount on a price?
Multiply the price by 0.20 to get the savings, then subtract it from the price. A $80 item at 20% off costs $64, and you save $16. The general math is always price ร (1 โ discount รท 100) โ or just type both numbers into the calculator above.
What is the formula for percent off?
Sale price = original price ร (1 โ discount รท 100). So a $120 jacket at 30% off is 120 ร 0.70 = $84, and the amount saved is original price ร discount รท 100, which is $36 here. The calculator runs both lines for you automatically.
How do I figure out the discount percentage from two prices?
Divide the sale price by the original price, subtract the result from 1, and multiply by 100. If a $90 item rings up at $63, that's (1 โ 63 รท 90) ร 100 = 30% off. Handy for checking whether a so-called sale is actually a sale.
Does this discount calculator work for multiple items?
It handles one price at a time, so add your items' prices together first and enter the total. If different items carry different discounts, run each one separately and add the sale prices together.
