Sales Tax Calculator
Sticker price versus register price — two different numbers. Add sales tax to see the true total, or back it out of a receipt to see what the item really cost.
How to use
- Enter the price. Either the pre-tax price on the tag, or the total from a receipt you already paid.
- Enter your sales tax rate. 8.25 for 8.25% — your receipt or your state's revenue site has the combined state + local number.
- Choose Add tax or Remove tax. Adding shows the register total; removing backs the tax out of a total you already paid.
- Read the breakdown. Total plus the exact tax dollars, shown on separate lines.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add sales tax to a price?
Multiply the price by (1 + rate ÷ 100). A $50 item at 8% tax is 50 × 1.08 = $54.00, and the tax portion is $4.00. Select “Add tax” above and the calculator shows both lines for you.
How do I remove sales tax from a total?
Divide the total by (1 + rate ÷ 100). If you paid $108 including 8% tax, the pre-tax price was 108 ÷ 1.08 = $100 and the tax was $8. Choose “Remove tax” above and enter the total you paid.
What sales tax rate should I use?
It depends on where you buy — US states range from 0% to over 10% once local add-ons are included. Check a receipt from a similar purchase or your state's department of revenue site, and enter the combined state + local rate.
Is sales tax calculated before or after discounts?
In most US states, sales tax applies to the discounted price — you pay tax on what you actually hand over. Enter the sale price (after any percent-off) as the price, then add tax on top.
